Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints among patients. The lumbar region of the spine – the lower back – is a delicate and remarkable structure. It is comprised of several nerves, ligament, joints, muscles, and interconnecting bones that work together to provide the body with support, strength, and flexibility.

As such, it is little wonder that the area is prone to injury. If any single component of this complex construction is disrupted then the entire area is compromised and often bears consequences that include pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility.

Pain in the lower back is most often due to a soft tissue injury. These include sprains, strains, and damage due to an accident such as sporting or automotive accidents. Other causes include poor ergonomic support, improper lifting or carrying of weight, and other common issues.

However, lower back pain can also be more serious and chronic. If pain lasts for more than three months, then it is often considered to be chronic and beyond the body’s natural ability to heal without intervention.

The most common causes for this type of lower back pain are dysfunction of joints like the sacroiliac or facet, herniated lumbar disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis, trauma such as fracture or dislocation, and improper curvature of the spine such as kyphosis or scoliosis. Other, less common, causes of lower back pain include autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease or fibromyalgia, tumor, and osteomyelitis – a rare condition that is extremely painful and life-threatening.

How Our Arvada Chiropractor Can Help

After evaluating your unique condition and determining the cause of your lower back pain, our chiropractor, Dr. White and the rest of our team will develop a treatment plan.  Some of the techniques that may be used include therapeutic massage, manual spinal manipulation, and spinal decompression therapy. However, the exact plan will depend entirely on the patient’s needs.
